Lajous will be in charge of promoting the reactivation of trains for passenger transportation in Mexico. This is a project presented by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and was supported by today’s president Claudia Sheinbaum.
Last February, the head of the Executive sent an initiative for the State to regain the right to use railway tracks to provide passenger transport services, which was approved this Tuesday by the Chamber of Deputies.
According to the president of Mexico, a budget of 150,000 million pesos is contemplated for the reactivation of passenger trains.
“150,000 million pesos and don’t worry because the deficit will decrease. “Everything is republican austerity,” he said.
Lajous reported that with this project thousands of kilometers of tracks for passenger trains will be launched.
“These reforms seek the implementation of passenger trains on the existing right of way, without affecting the public freight rail transport service, and the federal government may grant public entities, states, municipalities and parastatal entities of the public administration federal or private companies a concession for the public rail passenger transport service. This means that the State recovers the possibility of publicly operating these roads with a passenger transport service,” he stated.
