The number of political prisoners increases in Venezuela: 70 are teenagers

The NGO Penal Forum has recorded 1,784 arrests since July 29 throughout the country, the largest number of political prisoners in the context of demonstrations so far this century. Two releases were also recorded, although no further details were provided.


The organization Criminal Forum published updated figures on the situation of political prisoners in the country. As of Monday, October 7, there were 1,916 detainees for political reasons, including 70 adolescents between 14 and 17 years of age.

Since the first week of October, as detailed in a publication, the Penal Forum registered 11 people who have been detained in the context of the post-election protests, in rejection of the announcement made by the National Electoral Council about the victory of Nicolás Maduro in the elections. elections on July 28.

According to the ruling party, more than 2,400 arrests were made during the protests, a figure that considerably exceeds those of Foro Penal. There were also 27 deaths. The NGO only records arrests that qualify as “arbitrary” and when there are no elements of guilt regarding the detainee.

Of the total political prisoners, 1,676 are men and 240 women. Of them, 159 people belong to the military establishment. In addition, 148 have already been convicted.

This organization has registered 17,577 political prisoners since 2014, of which 14,000 have been released and assisted free of charge by the Penal Forum. In addition to the political prisoners, they have indicated that there are at least 9,000 people with measures restricting their freedom.
