The film's illuminator is murdered "Rome" in Xalapa

This Tuesday, October 8, the murder of the film illuminator was confirmed Victor Muro Velazquezallegedly occurred the day before in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz, according to the report of the State Attorney General’s Office.

Muro Velázquez, who has a long career in the film industry, had been a collaborator of Alfonso Cuaronin the Oscar-winning film “Roma,” and other renowned productions in Mexico, directed by Carlos Carrera and Arturo Ripstein, among others.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the illuminator’s body was found dismembered in two different homes in the center of the Veracruz capital, and the governor Cuitlahuac García reported that according to judicial authorities, the crime would have been committed by a co-worker of Muro, who is already detained.

“This is a male person, who lost his life in a situation that is still being investigated, there is a detainee, the alleged perpetrator, until now one of them known to him, a person who worked with him (…) This is not a security problem, he was not attacked by a criminal group, the line of investigation is: a co-worker dared to deprive him of his life, (…) the co-worker is detained,” said Governor Cuitláhuac García Jiménez.

However, Governor García indicated in a conference that “it is false that they are filmmakers (…) the one who allegedly died, and who needs to be identified, is the one who was in charge of installing the lighting (…) just see the imprecision of the information, and they dare to lie, because in some media there are already…filmmakers,” and described the crime as “regrettable.”

Last month, Muro Velázquez had directed a workshop for the students of the Luis Buñuel Veracruzana Film School, and this is how he said goodbye on a Facebook account: “Last September our Bachelor of Cinematography students participated in a special Lighting workshop by Maestro Víctor Muro, gaffer of films like ‘The crime of Father Amaro’ by Carlos Carrera, ‘The Gospel of Wonders’ by Arturo Ripstein and ‘Rome’ by Alfonso Cuarón, to mention some of his works.”

The Aluxes production companyfor which Muro worked, published the following message on its social networks: “We regret the sensitive death of our friend and teacher Víctor Muro Velázquez, a great human being, loved by many fellow filmmakers. Fly high, great Vic, thank you for teaching us to always see the light (…) rest in peace.”
