UCV warned that September 2024 was the second rainiest in 75 years

Valdemar Andrade, an expert from the UCV, warned that “the recent lack of rain may have contributed to a temporary increase in temperature”


The hydrometeorological engineer at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), Valdemar Andrade, warned on Monday, October 7, that September 2024 was the second wettest month in 75 years, after the rainfall recently recorded in the north-coastal area – including Caracas- and the west of the country.

In an interview granted to Radio Fe y AlegríaAndrade pointed out that other areas of the national territory have remained dry or with rains that are not enough; which causes the water levels in the Orinoco and Caroní rivers to drop to historic lows.

The UCV expert pointed out that in the months of March-April and September-October, a record of high temperatures is experienced in the northern coastal area due to its “bimodal regime”, also coinciding with the maximum amount of rain that is evident in the anus.

“The recent lack of rain may have contributed to a temporary increase in temperature,” he explained.

He pointed out that the El Niño phenomenon in the country generated 74% of droughts or less rain than average, however, he commented that La Niña produces precipitation that is 62% higher.

“The dry season of the 2024-2025 period is expected to see above-average rainfall,” he predicted.

The Department of Hydrometeorological Engineering of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) classified the month of September 2024 as “extreme rainy”, since according to its measurements, in the ninth month of the year a total of 249.7 liters per square meter (L /m2); which shows a record of 97.4% exceedance.

For him month of octoberexperts point out that we have almost reached the end of the 2024 rainy season – which officially ends in November – in what is a transition stage between the El Niño and La Niña phenomena, while they predict that it will be the most rainy of the year.

They propose a scenario where water levels due to rain range between 100 and 145 mm.

«The highest daily rainfall of the year, whose probability is 26.76%, based on historical observations, is expected to occur in the first week of October, with electrical storms and which is popularly called the Cordonazo de San Francisco,” says the UCV report, as well as suggesting that the average number of rainy days during October is 14.
