Around 100 thousand fishermen affected by the drought in the North of the country will have access to aid of R$ 2,824. The benefited fishermen number approximately 100 thousand, spread across cities that have declared a public calamity or emergency due to the drought.

Provisional Measure No. 1,263 of this Monday “institutes extraordinary aid intended for artisanal professional fishermen and fishermen beneficiaries of the Artisanal Fisherman’s Unemployment Insurance – Defense Insurance registered in municipalities in the North Region”.

Now, within five days, the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development will forward the list of municipalities affected by the drought and that are home to the beneficiaries. The National Social Security Institute (INSS), in turn, must prepare a list of beneficiaries and the date for receiving the resources.

Last month, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited the region with a delegation of ministers. On the occasion, he announced his “commitment” to help the local population, in an interview with Rádio Norte FM: “I came back from there with the commitment that taking care of those people is also my responsibility. I went there to see women, men and children.”
