Balance indicates 26 trans people elected to municipal councils

Fliparacatu brings together 63 national and international authors

A balance produced by the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra) and still being updated indicates that at least 26 trans people were elected to Brazil’s municipal councils in the 2024 elections. Despite being celebrated, the number is still lower than the 30 trans people elected in 2020. Balance indicates 26 trans people elected to municipal councils

“This year, of the more than 600 candidacies, we reached 26 elected or re-elected with the possibility of having even more throughout Brazil. Highlighting that the majority were elected in interior cities with strong representation of progressive parties, a majority of trans and transvestite women and with emphasis on black candidates”, celebrated Antra in a text published on its official page.

The association draws attention to the lack of data on non-binary and intersex people in the website of the Superior Electoral Court and states that many people who declared themselves trans at the TSE did so incorrectly.

Although all the candidates elected were for the municipal Legislature, the text also highlights the candidate for mayor Duda Salabert (PDT), who was the fifth most voted, with 97,315 votes.
