Cuba advances in controlling the epidemic, but without rushing

Progress is being made in controlling the epidemic throughout the country, but we cannot rush. This clear and direct message was presented via videoconference by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, during the meeting of the Government’s Temporary Work Group to confront COVID-19, which this Tuesday was headed by the First Secretary of the Party’s Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

During the meeting held at the Palace of the Revolution – which was also attended by Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa – the Prime Minister insisted on the importance of continuing to comply with epidemiological control measures at the present time.

“We have just concluded the meeting with the experts and scientists who have correspondence with the information that you from the territories have been giving. The forecasts reported here say that a decrease in the incidence of positive cases is expected for all provinces in the coming days, and from the foregoing it is inferred that progress is being made in controlling the epidemic in all regions of the country. , reflected the Head of Government.

In that sense, he specified that “another model predicted that, in the short term, the downward trend in active, confirmed and deceased cases will continue, and that we should be with this trend at the beginning of March.”

“The trend continues to decline, but we cannot rush, much less eliminate the health measures to contain transmission, which together with the entire vaccination process is what has allowed us to continue this downward trend,” said Marrero Cruz. .

The day was preceded by the usual exchange between President Díaz-Canel and a representation of the experts and scientists who participate directly in the confrontation with COVID-19.

At the meeting – where the Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz and the Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman were also present, the Doctor of Sciences Raúl Guinovart Díaz, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing of the University of Havana, ratified that for all the In the provinces, a decrease in the incidence of confirmed cases is forecast in the coming days, which translates, he said, into a control of the epidemic in all regions of the country.

“Today is a day where we have very favorable forecasts. In truth, during this last week what has been seen for each of the provinces is a growth in the control of the epidemic, a decrease in the number of confirmed cases throughout the country is observed; and although the numbers of people diagnosed with the disease continue to decline, it is forecast that in almost all of March we will continue to have confirmed cases, ” considered the expert, who for almost two years has explained the forecast graphs, every week, to the country’s top management.

During President Díaz-Canel’s meeting with experts and scientists, an item on the agenda was also dedicated to the revitalization of the Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention Program in Cuba, as a result of a detailed study carried out by researchers from the related Institute of Nephrology with the risks, damage and consequences of COVID-19.

Doctor of Sciences Raúl Herrera, explaining the research in detail, concluded that it is likely that renal lesions acquired during the acute phase of the disease, potentiated by persistent chronic inflammation, can progress slowly and asymptomatically towards advanced stages of the disease. Chronic Renal, suffered by more than 800 million people in the world. It is estimated that 875,000 adults suffer from it in Cuba.

Taking into account that chronic kidney disease has a silent evolution and its screening is essential, Dr. Raúl Herrera stressed the need to implement prevention actions and evolutionary control of these patients.

In this sense, the President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez was interested in the participation in this program of experts and specialists from other specialties and knowledge, who with their contributions could work together with the national industry.

“From engineering we must see all the equipment that is needed to treat chronic kidney disease, and what things we can do in Cuba, what development we can have,” said the president.

In the usual exchange every Tuesday with experts and scientists who directly participate in confronting the epidemic, the results of post-licensing studies of the Soberanas series were also presented, referring to the effect of vaccination on risk groups, the duration of response in vaccinees and monitoring of the impact on variants of concern in the pediatric population.

In this sense, the Doctor of Science Vicente Vérez, general director of the Finlay Institute of Vaccines, referred to the importance of having faced the Omicron wave with our vaccinated children over two years of age.
