Huniades Urbina, president of the National Academy of Medicine, recently reported that coronavirus cases in Venezuela continue to increase, at least for the last four weeks.

«In Venezuela, during the last week there are reports of an increase in Covid-19 cases, both in the private and public spheres. However, these data are from word of mouth because there is no official data,” said the pediatrician.

Urbina highlighted that the rainy season also predominates the influenza virus, but due to the symptoms and laboratory tests, doctors register cases that respond more towards the diagnosis of coronavirus.

This increase in coronavirus cases is added to the also increase in dengue cases. Given this, specialists recommend Venezuelans take precautions to avoid future infections and worsening health.

The president of the National Academy of Medicine highlighted that “the coronavirus is still present”, given the popular belief that covid-19, as the SARS CoV2 virus is known, ended at the end of the pandemic period. In that sense, he recommended to the population to use the mask again in public transport, closed places or where there are gatherings of people.

What happens with dengue?

Dr. Patricia Valenzuela, president of the Venezuelan Society of Infectious Diseases, warned that the authorities have not updated the data on the incidence of dengue since 2023.

He specified that the latest official data is public on the Pan American Health Organization page and corresponds to Epidemiological Week number 21 of the year 2023. “At that time, Venezuela already had a record of more than 4,800 cases of dengue,” he stated.

The specialist recalled that there is an increase in the number of cases, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean. “Venezuela is not in a bubble, in addition, it has a land border with one of the main countries that reports cases, which is Brazil.”
