Union leader Mauro Zambrano stressed that “salary and health must be a state policy.” He also commented that they plan a rally in front of the Ministry of Health or the Vice Presidency of the Republic in a few weeks to denounce the low salaries and bonuses.
Workers in the health sector demanded from the government of Nicolás Maduro an increase in salaries and bonuses, which barely reach eight dollars in a first payment. They also denounced a widespread hospital crisis, due to the low supply of supplies and the deteriorated infrastructure of the country’s hospitals.
The union leader and general coordinator of Health Monitor, Mauro Zambrano indicated that on October 12, it is estimated that health workers will receive a first payment of the bonuses, corresponding to eight dollars. At the end of October and during the first half of November, the rest of the payment will be received, to complete $32.
«They talk about happy Christmases, but how are there going to be happy Christmases with a monthly bonus of eight dollars. That can’t be,” he questioned.
Employees of various hospitals consider that remuneration should be between $500 and $2,000, according to a survey carried out by the Monitor. «With 8 dollars we bought half a kilo of rice and a carton of eggs. We don’t have enough for anything else,” said Jackeline Colmenares, an employee at Coche Hospital.
@maurozam10 This year there will be no ‘Merry Christmas’ in Venezuela! With a bonus of $32 in installments and with the family scattered around the world, no one can be happy. we want #AguinaldosDignosYa and for our family to return to the country.#AguinaldosDignosYa #decentpensions #LivingWageVzla #Workers #Venezuela #bonus #viral #health #education #foradignifiedage ♬ original sound – Mauro Zambrano
He recalled that there have been more than 900 days with the salary frozen at 130 bolivars, equivalent to 3.5 dollars, while the basic food basket exceeds 500 dollars per month.
Zambrano pointed out that health sector workers “solve from the outside” low salaries through informal trade, piecework or the remittances they receive from abroad. «When you solve that problem you realize that you reach the 24th (of December) without your son in the country you don’t have your brother. You have totally disintegrated families. Who can spend a happy Christmas with this economic situation? I don’t think anyone.”

The union leader stressed that “salary and health must be a state policy.” He also commented that they plan a rally in front of the Ministry of Health or the Vice Presidency of the Republic in a few weeks to denounce low salaries.
«We are not going to stop complaining. This is not just the health sector. We are meeting with the educational sector, pensioners and retirees. “We are activating throughout the country,” he said.
Regarding the situation in public health centers, the coordinator of Monitor Salud said that “the hospital crisis is totally widespread, but the workers are there. The human resource is there, the problem is that there is no supply of inputs, there is no technology, but we are not going to decline because health is a right.
He indicated that the union leadership currently feels the situation is “threatened,” due to persecution and intimidation. He recalled that several workers have been fired for expressing their discontent and, where appropriate, fHe was arrested a few months ago.
