Profile Ifigenia Martínez: the woman who gave the presidential sash to Claudia Sheinbaum

Ifigenia Martínezpresident of the Chamber of Deputies, died this Saturday, October 5 at the age of 94. This was confirmed by the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum and the coordinator of the Morena bench in San Lázaro, Ricardo Monreal.

Who was Ifigenia Martínez?

Ifigenia Martínez, the woman he voted for Claudia Sheinbaumwas a Mexican economist and politician recognized for her extensive career in the academic field and her participation in the country’s political life. Born on June 16, 1930, she played various significant roles throughout her career.

Ifigenia Martínez studied Economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and continued his training at Harvard University, where he obtained a master’s degree in Economics.

In the political arena, Ifigenia Martínez has been a prominent figure. He was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and later founded, together with Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). She held various positions, including the last one, as president of the Chamber of Deputies for the LXVI Legislature.

Ifigenia Martínez was known for her commitment to social justice and his defense of economic policies that seek to reduce inequality. Throughout her career, she received multiple recognitions for her work in the academic and political fields, such as the “Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz” Medal, awarded by the Chamber of Deputies to eminent women, and the Belisario Domínguez Medal awarded on the 7th. October 2021 in the Senate.
