The president of the National and International Transport AssociationHerman Mendieta, announced that the transport union decided to call a national strike on October 10.

The leader pointed out that the authorities are not taking the correct actions to combat crime. Along these lines, he described the state of emergency as “a salute to the flag” and assured that even under this measure “they have continued to kill people.”

“Crime has practically taken over the streets. When we go out to work, we don’t know if we are going to return or not,” he said on Canal N.

Mendieta questioned the “ineffectiveness” of the authorities in the face of the increase in citizen insecurity.

“Our authorities are used to doing nothing. They charge monthly what we pay them and they do absolutely nothing,” he said.

The leader announced that, on Thursday night, 90% of transport unions decided to call a strike “in defense of life and against extortion and contract killings” for Thursday, October 10. He added that unions from other sectors joined the measure.

“Not only the transportation sector has participated in this meeting, 90% of the organization of the transportation sector has participated, civil society has also joined,” he said on Canal N.

In that sense, he indicated that “this is not a political question, it is a question of the right to safeguard the physical integrity of people and life itself.”

“There are thousands of wineries that have closed due to extortion and contract killings,” he said.

Likewise, Mendieta demanded that the organized crime law approved by the Congress of the Republic be repealed.

“How am I going to notify that I am going to search the criminal’s home so that he has time to hide the evidence? It is absurd,” he exclaimed.

NOT EVERYONE WILL COMPLY WITH IT

Despite the call, the president of the National Association for the Integration of Transporters (Anitra), Martín Valeriano, clarified that his union has not agreed to abide by the national strike for this Thursday, October 10.

“We have not yet announced a strike. I don’t know where the strike announcements come from, when there is a conversation with the Executive and the Legislature,” he told RPP.

The leader said that after the last strike that took place on September 26, it was agreed to give the government a period of one month to take the pertinent actions regarding the crime that is now affecting them.
