SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) denounced the embargo of all its bank accounts as a consequence of a request filed by the Barahona Regional Education Office against the Barahona section of the teachers’ union.
A note issued on Friday night by the National Executive Committee of the ADP indicates that all the union’s accounts were affected, which prevented it from accessing its bank accounts at a time when it is organizing its elections scheduled for next Wednesday.
The Regional Directorate of Education in Barahona managed the seizure of the bank accounts of the ADP branch in Barahona, but according to the note from the National Executive Committee, the measure was extended to the entire union at the national level.
The entity blamed the Ministry of Education (MINERD) for the action and described it as an “imprudent and undemocratic act, attempting to stop the union elections, just five days before the vote, just when the assembly is underway.”
“An embargo on the accounts of the ADP in the middle of an electoral process has anti-democratic purposes and is a clear attack against freedom of association,” declared the National Executive Committee of the ADP.
It indicates that through the sheriff’s act 1999-2024, dated October 4, the ADP was subject to a withholding seizure of all its accounts at the national level, carried out by Regional 01 of Barahona, of the Ministry of Education.
The sheriff’s act indicates that the plaintiff is the Rional 01 of Barahona against the section of that city, however the complaint made by the ADP indicates that the embargo extended to the entire union nationwide.
The embargo is by virtue of a ruling handed down in 2017 by a Barahona court that declared a teaching strike carried out by the ADP section illegal and ordered the restart of teaching and imposed a penalty of 50 thousand pesos for each day of non-compliance. .
This appeal was filed by parents of several students on that occasion, who obtained a victory.
