The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), minister Cármen Lúcia, said this Friday (4) that disinformation in the elections represents a type of “digital halt”.
The minister’s statement was made this morning during a meeting with foreign delegations that will monitor the first round of municipal elections, which will be held next Sunday (6).
According to her, technology brought abuse of the use of algorithms and generated misinformation in the elections. For the minister, it is necessary to restore full freedom to vote.
“We created the digital halter. Someone puts something on our cell phone, on our computer, that misinforms us as if we were manipulated. Against this, the law fights so that we have the possibility of reclaiming full freedom to vote, which achieves democracy in anywhere in the world,” he said.
The president also highlighted that elections in Brazil are free and democratic. “The 2024 elections represent the challenge for us to have a Sunday of democratic joy, of democratic tranquility, of civility and peace when voting”, he added.
On Saturday night (5), the day before the election, Cármen Lúcia will make a statement on radio and TV to urge voters to vote.
The first round of elections will be on Sunday (6). The second round of the dispute can be held on October 27th in 103 municipalities with more than 200 thousand votersin which none of the candidates for mayor reaches more than half of the valid votes, excluding blank and null votes, in the first round.
