Carrera resigns and Cairo questions Ripoll: “We now set the bar high”

Carrera resigns and Cairo questions Ripoll: “We now set the bar high”

The decision was confirmed after Carrera also renounced his place on the Frente Amplio’s 609 list, which, according to sources in the sector, closed the chapter on his involvement in the case.

The Broad Front representative Cecilia Cairo (609) explained the situation to the Telenoche news program on Channel 4, pointing out that Carrera decided to leave her seat to face the investigation. “To be able to present themselves to the Prosecutor’s Office and have them tell them what they need, because until now we do not know what it is, unless it is the case that we all know,” Cairo declared, referring to the lack of clarity about the specific charges against the former senator. Cairo also highlighted the constant pressure exerted by the ruling party, saying that, given the scenario in which Carrera could have returned to the Senate, his definitive resignation was chosen. “What we did is resigned to Senator Charles Carrera, now he is not a senator, he is going to be just another militant,” Cairo said, ensuring that the decision was made with a view to the future of the movement.

In response to criticism from the ruling party, Cairo stressed that Carrera’s resignation will not affect the Frente Amplio campaign, and rejected the statements of Senator Jorge Gandini, who had suggested that the Frente Amplio would be harmed by the situation. “Gandini says that in short we are going to be screwed because we have one on the list that is printed and that he will not be able to campaign. “No, no, he is going to campaign, he is not going to be a candidate, but we don’t care,” said Cairo, who made it clear that the Broad Front militants can continue working from any position, whether as candidates or as activists.

Finally, Cairo referred to the “viciousness” that, in his opinion, Carrera has suffered throughout the process. “I think some things should happen,” he commented, linking Carrera’s case with the situation of Valeria Ripoll, vice presidential candidate. Cairo pointed out that the candidate for vice president of the ruling party, Valeria Ripoll, is being investigated for three possible crimes related to a complaint from an 86-year-old woman to whom he intended to cut off the electricity supply in the context of a neighborhood conflict: “One is damages, the other is a conjunction of the private with the public and the third is abuse of functions,” he explained.

Given this, he questioned whether Ripoll would make a decision similar to Carrera’s. “I don’t know what the vice presidential candidate is going to do if she is also going to resign, because we have now set the bar high,” Cairo concluded, alluding to the resignation as an example of political ethics within the Frente Amplio.
