Montevideo Declaration highlights Uruguay’s progress in the use of artificial intelligence
The Second Ministerial Summit on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which was held in Uruguay, closed with the Montevideo Declaration, which promotes consolidating a regional approach on the governance of artificial intelligence in Latin America and the Caribbean. The event highlighted Uruguay’s progress in redesigning policies for the use of new technology until 2030, achieved with the support of UNESCO and CAF.
The executive director of the Agency for Electronic Government and Information and Knowledge Society (Agesic), Hebert Paguas, participated in the activity; the executive president of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), Sergio Díaz-Granados; the deputy director general of Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO, Gabriela Ramos, and the minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation of Chile, Aisén Etcheverry Escudero. The objective was to work on the governance of artificial intelligence to establish agreements and lines of action for all countries in the region.
Paguas pointed out that at the summit “transcendental results” were achieved that include: having hosted the summit, concretizing the Montevideo Declaration, which was approved jointly with the participating countries, and planning the process until the next summit in the Republic. Dominican.
The Montevideo Declaration reflected five lines of work that refer to governance and regulation, talent and future of work, protection of vulnerable groups, environment, sustainability and climate change, and infrastructure, the leader reported.
Another point that stood out about the proposed initiatives was the implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and the Readiness Assessment Methodology and Ethical Impact Assessment Methodology (RAM) tool.
Paguas also highlighted that this type of event organized by Agesic, UNESCO and CAF fosters regional bodies to be able to dialogue, discuss and comment on where to look and think.
