The former mayor of the capital of Rio de Janeiro Roberto Saturnino Braga died this Thursday (3). The politician, who turned 93 years old on September 13, was admitted to the Intensive Care Center at Hospital Pró-Cardiaco, in the South Zone of the city of Rio, where he was admitted last Friday (27).
In 1986, with almost 40% of the votes for the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), Saturnino became the first mayor of Rio elected directly after redemocratization, a position he held until 1988.
Previously, he was a federal deputy in 1963, from a coalition formed by the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), the Renewal Labor Movement (MTR) and the Social Labor Party (PST), and a senator from 1975 to 1985 for the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB). ).
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Braga recalled his political career in an episode of the series Depoimentos Cariocas, from the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro.
