The former mayor of the capital of Rio de Janeiro Roberto Saturnino Braga died this Thursday (3). In 1986, with almost 40% of the votes for the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), Saturnino became the first mayor of Rio elected directly after redemocratization, a position he held until 1988.

Previously, he was a federal deputy in 1963, from a coalition formed by the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), the Renewal Labor Movement (MTR) and the Social Labor Party (PST), and a senator from 1975 to 1985 for the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB). ).

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Braga recalled his political career in an episode of the series Depoimentos Cariocas, from the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro.
