The Armed Forces will operate in 32 of the 92 municipalities in Rio de Janeiro during the municipal elections next Sunday (6). The military will operate in around 500 voting locations and on the main expressways.
The actions were presented at an alignment meeting of the Extraordinary Institutional Security Office (Gaesi) of the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ). The group is made up of representatives of security forces who work to prevent and repress criminal conduct that could put the normality of elections at risk. The military will reinforce security and provide logistical support.
The presence of the military in the Rio de Janeiro elections was requested by the TRE to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), in partnership with the state government.
The president of TRE-RJ, judge Henrique Carlos de Andrade Figueira, reiterated his confidence in the success of the operational and security logistics of the elections, the result of meticulous planning. According to him, everything was done very carefully, thinking about the well-being of the voter, the fairness and equality of the dispute between the candidates. “We changed 53 voting locations for security reasons, which simplified the logistical operation. Thus, voters will vote in more protected locations, free from external influence and pressure, and the surplus personnel mobilized to these locations will be optimized, with distribution guided by intelligence”, he stated.
The Military Police will provide security and distribution of ballot boxes at the 4,974 voting locations across the state and will provide support for electoral inspection. Police officers will also provide preparatory escorts for electronic voting machines, with the support of the Federal Highway Police and the Federal Police.
In the city of Rio, the Municipal Guard will support the security of 99 sections and will guide traffic, ensuring the free movement of voters during the voting period.
