Thanks to MLS Supporters’ Shield that Inter Miami won this Wednesday, Lionel Messi won his 46th title and expanded his lead as the footballer with the most trophies in history. Inter Miami beat the Columbus Crew 2-3, thanks to a double from Messi and a goal from Luis Suárez, and took this title that recognizes the best team of the regular season in the MLS.
The Florida team only has two titles in its brief history and both came after Messi landed: the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2024. Now it will also have the option of winning the MLS Cup, which takes the winner of the MLS ‘playoff’ and for which Inter Miami will have home field in its favor including a hypothetical final.
Messi and the numbers of his career
With 46 trophies in his unrivaled record, since this year he also won the Copa América with Argentina, Messi, according to BeSoccer data for EFE, takes two titles ahead of Brazilian Dani Alves (44). Behind them are the Egyptian Hossam Ashour (39), the Spanish Andrés Iniesta (38) and the Brazilian Maxwell (37). Next are the Spanish Gerard Piqué and the Welshman Ryan Giggs with 36, but they were joined tonight by the Spanish Sergio Busquets, who with the MLS Supporters’ Shield achieved his 36th trophy. With 35 are the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, the French Karim Benzema and British Kenny Dalglish.

After this MLS Supporters’ Shield, Messi has won, along with Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suárez, 14 titles in total, although this is the first for Inter Miami with all of them given that Suárez landed in the MLS this year and did not lift the Leagues Cup of 2023. The previous 13 of this golden quartet were with Barcelona with four LaLiga titles, four Copas del Rey, one Champions League, one European Super Cup, two Spanish Super Cups and one Club World Cup.
