Dozens of vehicles stranded today on the Panamericana Sur and Costanera highway due to the protest of artisanal fishermen in Matarani in the province of Islay, in the districts of Lomas and Atico in the province of Caravelí, Arequipa.

Vehicular traffic was restricted early on, because the national road was occupied by fishermen, who had announced days before the strike in the entire southern macro area of the sector, from the port of Lomas to Vila Vila in Tacna.
Fishermen reject RM-00396-2024-Produce. They ask that the agreed limit of one thousand kilos of horse mackerel fishing per day be corrected and established. Furthermore, the rejection of RM-0389-2024-Produce, for being contrary to the agreement between artisanal fishing leaders and bolichitos with Produce officials in the Port of Ilo (Moquegua), on August 29.

“They want to ban a resource within the Arequipa area. Producce tells us that the sea has no limits and now it sets a limit for us. “We are not asking you to give us a piece of land, we are only asking for respect.”said a representative of the fishermen.
Also, They are against the unfair competition of China’s fleet in the “Sea of Grau”. They affirm that squid is for the jigger fishermen of Peru because it is one of the main activities for the sector.
They demand the governor of the Arequipa region, Rohel Sánchez, intervene on the border between Lomas (Arequipa) and Marcona (Ica), that harms the work of Lomas fishermen in Arequipa territory.
