Three sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a guard in Mayari

Crimen, Mayarí, Holguín, cadena perpetua

MIAMI, United States. – The Provincial Court of Holguín sentenced three of the four involved in the murder of Orlando Pérez Ardevel, a 49-year-old custodian of the Mayarí Forestry Industrial Economic Unit, to life imprisonment, according to a report broadcast this Tuesday on the Television News (NTV).

Meanwhile, a fourth person involved was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

According to official information, the crime occurred in the area known as Entronque Ocujal, about 25 kilometers from the capital of the Mayarí municipality, when the individuals tried to steal the batteries from several vehicles and the Security agent surprised them.

The official press report indicated that, after the event, the authorities began an investigative process. “In less than 48 hours, the perpetrators were identified and arrested, thanks to the unconditional support of the people and the meticulous work of the Home Office“, specifies the report of the NTV.

The use of advanced forensic techniques, such as odor, chemical and biological fingerprints, was key to the investigation. “We applied the canine technique and carried out a detailed examination at the crime scene, which made it possible to identify those responsible and corroborate their participation,” the investigators explained.

The Provincial Court of Holguín, considering the seriousness of the crime and the personal circumstances of the accused, decided to impose the most severe sanctions provided for in the Penal Code, according to the official report.

Reports about crimes on the Island have increased dramatically in recent years, in tandem with the serious socioeconomic crisis that the country is suffering.

In February of this year, the Cuban authorities also dictated life sentence for a man from the town of Jaraguá, in Cienfuegos, for the murder, in 2023, of a farmer dedicated to livestock.

The Court of Cienfuegos held an oral and public trial, “due to its exemplary nature,” to condemn to the man from the Abreus municipality. A report of Caribbean Channel echoed the news. Although he did not mention the name of the accused or the other three involved in the case of theft and slaughter of large livestock, it is presumed to be the murder of farmer Yordany Díaz, which was reported last year in the independent media. Díaz would have been killed after recognizing one of the cattle thieves.

The three accused of robbery “were evaluated individually taking into account that their crime only affects the economic order of the nation” and received lesser sentences, they clarified.

Instead, perpetual deprivation of liberty was imposed on the murderer “taking into account the seriousness of the event that occurred.” “They are crimes that affect the economic order of the nation, which also have an impact on the peasantry,” the authorities alleged.
