76% of Mexicans feel more unsafe at street ATMs

81.8% of women feel unsafe at ATMs located on the street compared to 68.9% of men who share this feeling. In the country there were 63,622 ATMs until last July and 11,825 bank branches, according to figures from the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV).

In that month alone, 194.5 million transactions were made, of which 12.6% were made in Mexico City and another 12.3% in the State of Mexico, according to data from the regulator.

The Bank of Mexico (Banxico), for its part, had 65,730 ATMs until last March, of which 54.6% were outside a bank branch.

ENVIPE also highlights that people with basic education are the ones who felt the most insecurity in these spaces, as well as people between 30 and 59 years old.

The feeling of insecurity among banks has also caused some financial institutions, both banks and insurance companies, to launch insurance when making withdrawals at ATMs.

BanCoppel, BBVA, Citibanamex, HSBC or Scotiabank are some of the banks that have this insurance that covers thefts of 10,000 to 20,000 pesos.

Bank branches are also considered unsafe

In banks, 62.7% of Mexicans feel insecurity, especially people with basic education.

The figure also decreased compared to the 2022 survey, when the perception of insecurity was held by 65.7% of Mexicans.
