Alianza Lápiz: limiting entry of Venezuelans with expired passports is unconstitutional

José Ignacio Barragán, spokesperson for International Affairs of Alianza del Lápiz, called to stop the policy of breaking diplomatic relations affecting hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans who have emigrated from the country. He recalled that this supposed permission to return to the country for having expired passports violates article 50 of the Constitution.


The Pencil Alliance warned that the measure that limits the entry of Venezuelan citizens to their country with expired passports and the supposed permission required to return to national territory “is in violation of article 50 of the Constitution.”

José Ignacio Barragánspokesperson for International Affairs of this political organization, said that the Government has assumed a “schizophrenic” attitude of breaking diplomatic relations with several countries in the region due to political issues, a situation that he stated affects more than 2.6 million migrants who They are in those nations with which commitments are not maintained.

“It is illegal to ask for a permit, in this case, other than the Venezuelan identity card or passport so that a Venezuelan can return to their country (…) On the one hand, they tell Venezuelan migrants, more than seven million, to found outside, let him return to the homeland; but on the other hand, that same chancellor (Yván Gil) puts bureaucratic obstacles so that Venezuelans can return,” he warned.

After questioning the lack of official information regarding this fact from the competent authorities, Barragán specified that the Government’s diplomatic actions have caused the number of international flights in the country to decrease by 54%.

“As a result of July 28, in a unilateral and schizophrenic manner, they have broken consular and air relations (…) It is not possible for Foreign Minister Yván Gil to get up every week to see with which country he is going to break relations,” the representative of Alianza del Lápiz.
