Nicaragua defends Cuba and Venezuela at the UN and denounces "israel genocide"

Nicaragua came out in defense of Cuba and Venezuela this Monday at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, while on the other hand it denounced what it called the “genocide that the government of Israel and its allies (…) continue to commit.” against the Palestinian people.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, Valdrack Jaentschke, participated on behalf of President Daniel Ortega in the UN plenary session. Ortega has not participated in the plenary session for more than 16 years, after returning to power in 2007.

The chancellor came out in defense of the so-called “own models of institutionality and participatory democracy” of Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela, despite these countries being accused of undermining democracy and violate human rights by various governments and international organizations.

He also expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause. “We are not silent, nor will we be silent,” Jaentschke said on the stand.

Silence due to criticism from Guatemala and Costa Rica

The Nicaraguan foreign minister did not mention or respond to the accusations at the United Nations from countries such as Costa Rica, which denounced that the Central American country suffers from “a dictatorship” that generates massive migration in the region, and from Guatemala, which accused Managua of ” repress aspirations for freedoms and justice.”

Valdrack Jaentschke also did not allude to the crisis that Nicaragua has been experiencing since 2018, which has left more than 300 dead and thousands of exiles.
