Cerro Porteño dismisses Manolo Jiménez

Cerro Porteño announced this Monday the dismissal of the Spanish coach Manolo Jimenez after the 0-3 defeat suffered on Sunday against 2 de Mayo on matchday 13 of the Clausura Tournament in Paraguay. The Asunción team fell to fourth place in the standings.

Along with Manolo Jiménez, the club’s sports manager, also Spaniard Fernando Jubero, was fired.

Half a year in office

Jiménez, former coach of Sevilla, Zaragoza, Las Palmas and AEK Atenas among others, took the reins of the Barça team on March 20, replacing the Argentine Victor Bernaywho was fired after adding three wins, five draws and two losses in the first stage of the local Apertura Tournament.

After an outstanding campaign in the Apertura, in which Cerro Porteño finished second in the table, three points below the champion, Libertad, the team had an irregular performance during the Clausura that was the trigger for the discomfort of the Cerro fans.

“Cowards resign”

In the conference after the match against 2 de Mayo – which rose to third place – Jiménez himself asked for forgiveness and admitted feeling ashamed for what happened. “The first and the most responsible is me,” he said when referring to the result.

Asked about his eventual resignation, he responded: “Only cowards resign.”

In his 34 games on the Cerro Porteño bench, Jimenez accumulated 17 wins, 9 draws and 8 losses.
