The National Federation of Motorcycle Taxi Drivers announced a national strike for next October 31, in response to the growing wave of extortion and violence that affects its members in various areas of Lima, especially in districts such as San Juan de Lurigancho.
Motorcycle taxi drivers have decided to take this radical measure due to the lack of effective actions by the government to stop the attacks and threats they suffer daily.
The situation of motorcycle taxi drivers has become unsustainable. Despite the entry into force of the state of emergency in the most dangerous areas of Lima, extortion continues to be a recurring problem that puts lives at risk.
Transporters have reported that, in many cases, they are forced to pay sums of money to criminal groups under threats of death or physical violence. Those who refuse to comply with these demands face constant attacks and intimidation.
The national strike seeks to make this critical situation visible and demand that the government implement urgent measures to combat extortion and guarantee the safety of motorcycle taxi drivers.
Representatives of the federation have indicated that this strike will be a peaceful, but forceful, demonstration to make their demands heard throughout the country.
