Abel Barrera Hernández: Walls and hurricanes against the 43

Q

to maintain long live the memory of the 43 missing normal students, the mothers and fathers unveiled a memorial on Reforma Avenue. In the march on the 26th they received the fraternal greeting of several groups of missing relatives, thousands of students accompanied them to the Zócalo plateau. In the midst of the persistent rain, the cry You are not alone! It was continuous along the avenues. Saddened by the absence of their children and the indolence of the authorities, the mothers and fathers revived their courage when they observed that from the Hemicycle to Juárez the government placed metal plates, as if their presence in the center of the city represented a danger to the security of the capital’s residents.

The distance between the President of the Republic and the mothers and fathers was accentuated in the last meetings they held at the National Palace. His repeated position of blaming the lawyers, the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts and the OAS for conspiring against the Army discouraged the relatives, because beyond the insults, he did not comment on the lines of investigation or present progress on the whereabouts of his children. The lack of results led the parents to end the meetings with the President.

Their tenacious and long-lasting fight contrasted with the mistreatment they received in Mexico City. The officials of the Undersecretary of Human Rights carried in cardboard boxes the second report from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on the missing young people from the Ayotzinapa Normal School. They arrived at the offices of the Miguel Agustín Pro Center to deliver a copy to each family member. The mothers and fathers asked for more respect: they were not there to receive correspondence. They clarified that their addresses are located in other states where they can receive all types of notifications. Without taking his considerations into account, the President’s report was disseminated nationally.

The animosity materialized with the walling of the Center and the placement of concrete barriers to restrict access to the Zócalo. The treatment of non grata people rekindled the courage and indignation of the marching contingents. Nobody stopped the supportive youth who demonstrated their affection and adherence to the movement that the mothers and fathers of the 43 have championed. In their final message they described the filter installed by the authorities as a provocation. They remembered that no one had put barriers in place for them to demonstrate peacefully. They stated that they are going to jump whatever they have to jump to get to the truth. No one will stop their march and whoever governs, their fight will continue.

It’s not just the metal walls that have to be removed; The most difficult task in this long battle will be to crack the walls of impunity that protect the Army. It will not be force, but reason, that will reveal their outrages that they keep like a treasure in the 800 pages. Mothers and fathers are now classified as adversaries for denouncing that the President betrayed their trust and that he turned his back on them to protect the Army. The driving force that moves them is to find their children. The strength of his love is above political-partisan affiliations.

They came to the city to shake the national conscience and remember that 10 years ago a state crime was committed. Her brave testimony shows us the wound that bleeds for her 43 children and for thousands of missing people. There is a great debt with the victims who are invisible and relegated from the public agenda. His fleeting presence was recorded in thousands of young people who, in the midst of the flames of the metal walls of the National Palace, read that the 43 they live in our rebellion.

At nine at night, the bus caravan took the Tlalpan road towards the Ayotzinapa Normal. In the early morning, the mothers and fathers of Tixtla faced the threat of water from the ravines overflowing and entering their homes. The fear was greater when they knew that the water from the lagoon had reached the sanctuary of the Nativity. Affected families evacuated their homes in search of shelter. The uncertainty and fear were greater due to the incessant rains.

In the municipalities of the Costa Chica, the situation is very serious because the hurricane John He entered Marquelia and Copala with all his fury. Most homes are damaged and the highway to Oaxaca, which President López Obrador recently inaugurated, has many landslides and fallen trees. In the region of Ayutla de los Libres and Tecoanapa, where several mothers and fathers live, the communities are isolated and without receiving aid.

In La Montaña, the 19 municipalities are cut off. The community of Monte Alegre, municipality of Malinaltepec, where one family of 43 resides, there are many damaged homes. The road from Tlapa to Marquelia requires urgent attention due to the breaking of the hills. The Costa Chica, the Montaña and the Central zone make up the three regions most affected by the hurricane John. More than 35 mothers and fathers reside in those places in extremely precarious conditions. Most of their communities are cut off. The rivers, lagoons and ravines are causing destruction to their homes and crops.

They are saddened by not hearing from their relatives due to the Internet failure and the anguish of not reaching their homes. The few reports that there are are that there is damage to the roofs of their homes. The rain has softened the walls of those built with adobe. This season they will no longer be able to eat tender corn, because the wind destroyed their cornfields. Their coffee orchards were also lost. The few farm animals they have were swept away by the ravines, and the wind knocked down a small store. The absence of their children hits their lives harder due to the walls of power and the fury of the hurricane.
