MÉRIDA, Mexico -. The vice president of the Supreme Court of Cuba, Maricela Sosa Ravelo, minimized the crisis of insecurity and drug consumption in Cuba.
Speaking to the BBCthe magistrate assured that the problem is being “exaggerated on social networks” and denied the possibility that many crimes are not reported due to a lack of public confidence in the police.
“In my 30 years as a judge, I do not believe that the Cuban people lack confidence in their authorities,” he said.
“In Cuba, the police have a high success rate in solving crimes. “We do not see people taking justice into their own hands – as happens in other parts of Latin America and other places – which suggests that the population trusts the Cuban justice system,” he said.
The statements of this regime official contrast with the testimony of relatives of victims of violence in Cuba interviewed by the BBC for the same article.
For example, that of Samantha González, 20 years old, Yan Franco’s sisterthe 19-year-old teenager stabbed to death outside a music studio in Central Havana.
“The violence is getting out of control. They are basically gangs and they fight each other like gangs. “That’s where all this comes from, these murders and deaths of young people,” said the young woman, who believes that “many young people have been murdered this year.”
The BBC report also refers to the high incidence of consumption of the drug popularly called “the chemical.”
The chemical, a cheap drug that mixes marijuana with other substances, is produced by hand, which reduces costs, he explained. a report by Claudia Padrón Cueto for Cubanet in January of this year.
And since it is so economical, it is the perfect business for a seller: it generates great demand at an unbeatable price: between 150 and 200 pesos per dose, while a pound of sugar exceeds 300 pesos. Since the effect is short-lived, customers buy and buy, the report reads.
The authorities have already publicly acknowledged the existence of this drug and recently televised the trials of 22 citizens linked to its distribution.
