President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva leaves this Sunday (29) for Mexico, where he will follow the Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration as the country’s new president. The trip takes place days after the president returns from the United States, where participated in the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in New York.
Sheinbaum’s inauguration will be on October 1st. An ally of the current Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, she is 61 years old and won the election with around 60% of the votes, becoming the first woman to lead the country.
In her political career, she was Secretary of the Environment of Mexico City and former mayor of the country’s capital.
Before taking office, on Monday (30), Lula will participate in a business forum and will also have bilateral meetings with López Obrador, who is leaving office, as well as his successor.
This will be Lula’s third official visit to Mexico as president. He went to the country in his first two terms, in 2003 and 2007.
In 2023, bilateral trade between the two countries reached a value of US$14.1 billion, the highest historical value and an increase of 14% compared to 2022. Mexico was the fifth main destination for Brazilian exports in the world in 2023 , according to data from Apex Brasil.
