Submarine electric cable would cost US$1.2 billion

Caribbean Transmission executives indicated that the project will begin in 2027 and will begin operating in 2031

The installation of a bidirectional submarine electrical cable, 116 kilometers between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, will entail an investment of US$1.2 billion and the first groundbreaking is expected in 2027 and will begin operating in 2031.

The information was offered by executives of the Caribbean Transmission company, during the presentation of the Hostos Project, an innovative electrical interconnection initiative between the East coast of the country and Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.

Rafael Vélez, executive director of Caribbean Transmission and Tirso Selman, director of the Hostos Project, explained that the plan involves the construction of a 700 megawatt plant in San Pedro Macorís. It will be financed by Dominican and Puerto Rican investors.

They highlighted that the project will not only increase energy security, but will also promote the use of renewable energy.

According to the schedule, between 2024-2027 it is intended to obtain the presidential permit of the United States, carry out environmental studies and obtain environmental permits in the country (Dominican Republic).

During the period 2027-2029, the start of civil work, horizontal excavation and the construction of a generation plant in the country is expected.

Between 2029-2030, the installation of the submarine cable and the converters is contemplated, as well as testing and commissioning, Selman said in the presentation.
