AREQUIPA, Peru – After the interruption of navigation caused by the passage of Hurricane Helene over the west of the Island, the Cuban authorities reestablished maritime transportation between the Isle of Youth and Batabanó this Saturday.
This is what he reported via Facebook the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, who explained that as a consequence of the storm surges generated by the hurricane, the buoy that locates the entrance channel of the port of Batabanó detached.
According to the owner, work is being done “acceleratedly” on the placement of a new buoy by the Geocuba Cienfuegos company with the support of the tugboat from the Navegación Caribe company of the Isla de la Juventud.
“The purpose is that the conditions are created so that it can dock the Perseverance Ferry who has already left Nueva Gerona,” said Rodríguez Dávila.
The minister assures that the main officials of the Cuban Maritime Administration are located in Surgidero de Batabanó, who coordinate with the authorities of the Isle of Youth, Batabanó and the Mayabeque province. According to the statement, they will continue there until access to the port of Batabanó is reestablished.
This September 28, the minister also notified that the LAMBDA Siboney fishing vessel was stranded during the journey from Havana to Gerona.
The ship, approximately 32 meters long and with a prefabricated hull, which had recently been repaired, ran aground at half past one in the morning today.
The place of the stranding is the La Mulata cove in the Tabaco lighthouse north of Bahia Honda.
“The crew members are not in danger and the Border Guard Troops sent a boat to the scene to provide help. The rescue system was activated with Antillana de Salvamento to proceed as established,” the official added.
Most of the boats in the Cuban fishing fleet are in poor condition.
