This report includes recommendations on general precautions and details the areas considered most dangerous in the Chilean capital. According to the document, Santiago is classified as a “Level 2” destination, meaning that travelers are advised to exercise a high degree of caution due to the increase in crime in certain areas.
Among the places mentioned as the most dangerous of Santiago, one of the most notable is the airport environment. The embassy warns about robberies and assaults that frequently occur in the vicinity, and advises tourists to remain alert when arriving and leaving this area. In this sense, it is advisable to avoid showing valuable objects, such as watches, phones or laptops, which are usually the main targets of criminals.
Another point dangerous mentioned is the Central Market, which includes nearby areas such as La Vega. Although it is a popular place among locals and tourists for its cuisine and fresh produce, the embassy warns about theft that often occurs in these busy markets. Criminals often take advantage of the crowds of people to steal wallets and backpacks, especially from unsuspecting tourists.
Cerro Santa Lucía, an emblematic tourist site for its natural beauty and panoramic views of the city, has also been included on the list.
