"The worst environmental disaster in the history of Santa Cruz": more than 7 million hectares are already affected

Santa Cruz is going through the worst environmental disaster in its history, with more than 7 million hectares consumed by fire. This was reported this Friday by Jhonny Rojas, coordinator of the Departmental Emergency Operations Center (COED).

“It is the biggest environmental disaster who has experienced the department of Santa Cruz. They continue working, it is hard, tireless work. Unfortunately, these persist fires provoked,” Rojas said.

Despite the rains that fell on Thursday, the department still faces 45 active fires in 17 municipalities, according to the Government report.

“The rains helped reduce the intensity of the fire, but we have not managed to completely control the fires. “Firefighters continue to work tirelessly, monitoring and searching the affected areas,” said Rojas.

To date, more than 1,000 people, including firefighters, rescuers and volunteers, are deployed to fight the fire. The Government of Santa Cruz has mobilized 75 vehicles, including trucks, tankers and heavy machinery, to support combat efforts and care for the affected communities.

The impact of these fires is devastating: 26 communities have suffered direct damage, 21 homes have been destroyed and More than 4,100 families are affected. In addition, more than 7 million hectares have already been devastated by fire.
