The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, spoke today (27) about bets, betting games online. After President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended that the federal government propose measures to control sports betting in the country and restrict the use of the Bolsa Família card in betting, the Minister of Finance defended that “the time has come to put the order in this and protect the Brazilian family.”
In an audio sent by his press office to journalists late this morning (27), Haddad said that there is a delay in regulating bets, which comes from previous governments. According to the minister, the current government tried to regulate betting shops in the first half of 2023 through a provisional measure, but the document “expired” and was not voted on by the National Congress.
Now, he said, President Lula has asked his ministers to take action to ensure this regulation takes place.
“The time has now come. President Lula did everything he could to bring order to this. And now he is equipped with all the necessary instruments to regulate this matter, which is very delicate for the Brazilian family. The president has already asked for action from all ministries involved, Finance, Health, Social Development and Sport”, he said.
According to Haddad, the regulation of bets was a topic that should have already been discussed in the government of former president JairBolsonaro.
“Betting was legalized at the end of the Temer government and the law provided that the Executive would have two years to regulate it, extendable for another two years. In other words, the law provided that during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro the matter had to be regulated. But Bolsonaro didn’t do that”, he highlighted.
“Unfortunately, this did not happen under the previous government. Unfortunately, there was a lack of attention to this matter. And now I can assure you that the Brazilian Executive has in its hands the necessary instruments to regulate and curb the abuses that we are seeing in our society. Rest assured that the government is paying attention and, despite this enormous delay and neglect, the time has come to put this in order and protect the Brazilian family”, reinforced Haddad.
According to the minister, the regulations proposed by the government provide for the prevention of money laundering and family debt through betting. “It will also be necessary to monitor low-income families and adults who are in a condition of dependence.”

The Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS) announced this Friday (27) the creation of a Working Group to analyze the use of resources from the Bolsa Família card with bets online (bets).
The group will work in partnership with the Federal Inspection Network for Bolsa Família and Cadastro Único with the aim of presenting a proposal, by October 2nd, to restrict the distortion of the purpose of the program. Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health and Civil House will also work on the action in an integrated manner.
