Éricka works from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. as support in the administrative area of a company that is dedicated to installing security cameras, so she says she can have a second job in the afternoons or even on the weekend.
He earns around 12,000 pesos a month, but to cover all his household expenses and have a little more “slack,” he needs another job, which is why he has already attended some job interviews.
In Mexico, the underemployed population stood at 4.4 million people in the second quarter of 2024. According to Inegi, these are the people who declared they have the need and availability to work more hours.
Within this underemployed population, 328,971 people said they were in a position to search for additional work.
Although on a national scale this number of people is 18% lower than in the second quarter of 2023, some entities experienced a significant increase in Mexicans looking for a second job.
This is the case of Morelos, where the population under this condition increased 148.1% when comparing the second quarter of 2024 against the same period of 2023.
Next is Aguascalientes, with an increase of 88.1%; San Luis Potosí, with 87.1%; Chihuahua, with 73%, and Hidalgo, with 71%.
From there, with a more moderate increase in this population seeking additional employment, is Hidalgo, with a growth of 41.1%; Nayarit, with 28.6%; Nuevo León, with 23.8%, and Michoacán, with 11.6%.
While Guerrero, Campeche, Sonora, Tlaxcala and Baja California Sur registered increases below 10%.
