The unemployment rate, also known as the unemployment rate, fell to 6.6% in the quarter ended in August this year. According to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad), released this Friday (27) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), this is the lowest rate for a quarter ending in August since the start of the survey, in 2012.
In the previous quarter, ending in May 2024, the rate had been 7.1%. In the same period of the previous year, that is, the quarter ending in August 2023, the rate had been 7.8%.
The unemployed population was 7.3 million, the lowest number since the quarter ended in January 2015. The number is 6.5% lower than in the previous quarter (502 thousand people less) and 13.4% lower than the previous year (minus 1.1 million).
The total number of workers in the country reached a record: 102.5 million. The increases are 1.2% compared to the previous quarter (1.2 million more jobs) and 2.9% compared to the previous year (2.9 million more people).
“The low unemployment reflects the expansion of demand for workers in various economic activities, taking the unemployment rate to values close to those of 2013, when this indicator was at its lowest level”, states the research coordinator, Adriana Beringuy.
