Costa Rican Foreign Minister at the UN: “There is no doubt that Maduro did not win the elections”

The representative of Costa Rica assured that Venezuela cannot be considered a democracy. He asked not to normalize the “dictatorship” and repression


During his speech before the UN General Assembly, the chancellor of Costa RicaArnoldo André, once again made clear his country’s position on the results of the presidential elections of July 28.

«There is no doubt that Nicolás Maduro did not win the elections. There is also no doubt that he plans to stay in power at all costs. Let’s not allow repression and dictatorship in Venezuela to be normalized once again,” André pointed out this Thursday, September 26.

In this sense, as recorded EFE, The official recalled that the vast majority of countries in the region have condemned the “manipulation of the results” of the Venezuelan elections, all while continuing the demand for “an impartial, transparent and independent verification” of the results.

Likewise, the representative of Costa Rica assured that Venezuela cannot be considered a democracy. “A democracy does not expel 8 million of its citizens or cause an unprecedented migration crisis whose repercussions are felt throughout the Western Hemisphere,” he argued.

In the same way, he maintained that a democracy does not persecute or intimidate, imprison or torture “for political reasons.”

The foreign minister also referred to Nicaragua. He stated that Daniel Ortega leads a “dictatorship” that represses citizens.

«There are thousands of people who cross our northern border every day fleeing the repression of a dictatorship that has been in Nicaragua for almost three decades, a dictatorship that has deprived them of their freedom, their human rights, their dreams and even their citizenship, making them stateless,” he denounced.
