Havana and Russia sign agreement on real estate

Bruno Rodríguez, Serguéi Lavrov, Cuba, Rusia

MADRID, Spain.- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, signed an agreement on Wednesday, September 25, on the granting of real estate in Moscow, in the context of the High-Level Segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is taking place in New York.

The MINREX reported in a brief note on the meeting between the two foreign ministers, mentioning that the agreement will allow the concession of properties in the Russian capital to house the Cuban Embassy in the Russian Federation. No additional details were offered on the terms or implications of said agreement.

Bruno Rodríguez, through his account on X (formerly Twitter), stated: “It is always a pleasure and a productive meeting with my dear friend Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia. We reviewed the excellent state of multifaceted bilateral relations and joint cooperation projects. I thanked the Russian Government and people for their support and solidarity with Cuba.”

In May last year, during the visit of Russian politician and businessman Boris Titov to the island, the Cuban regime offered land for usufruct to Russian companies to exploit for a period of 30 years. Titov, who heads the Cuban-Russian Business Committee, said at the time that both nations had taken decisive steps towards deeper cooperation in strategic sectors.

In recent years, ties between the two regimes have intensified. In June 2024, three ships and a nuclear submarine of the Russian Navy arrived in Havanain whose port they remained for five days.

Amid the international uproar, the Cuban regime’s Ministry of the Armed Forces (MINFAR) specified that “none of the ships” carried nuclear weapons and indicated that the visit was in line “with the historic relations of friendship between Cuba and the Russian Federation” and was “strictly in accordance with the international regulations of which Cuba is a State Party.”

The growing alliance between Cuba and Russia is taking place in an international context where both countries face sanctions and isolation from the West. Meanwhile, Havana has expressed its unconditional support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, further consolidating its political and diplomatic closeness with Moscow.
