Helene gains strength: Causes landslides in coastal communities of Pinar del Río

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The hurricane Helene The hurricane has intensified slightly and the force of its winds has been felt in coastal communities of Pinar del Río, where it has caused destruction. In the town of Cortés, south of the Sandino municipality, several houses suffered total collapses and one lost its roof, according to confirmed the regime’s official press on social media.

Pinar del Río has been hit by storm surges and strong winds reaching 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts.

The Cuyaguateje River burst its banks and is now seven metres high, forcing residents of the Isabel Rubio People’s Council to move to the homes of friends and relatives. Eight families in total had to be evacuated.

The authorities Pinar del Río residents warn that the river could rise even further.

Heavy rains caused light flooding in some areas, mainly on the southern coast. At Cabo de San Antonio, waves of three to five metres were recorded.

Winds extend about 555 kilometers from the center of circulation and Helene is expected to reach the state of Florida as an extremely dangerous Category 4, the Ministry of Health warned. National Hurricane Center from the USA

Helene is centered about 460 miles or 735 kilometers southwest of Tampa, Florida, moving north at 12 mph (19 km/h).

In Boca de Galafre, municipality of San Juan y Martínez, storm surges and maximum sustained winds of 40 km/h and a higher gust of 68 km/h have been reported.

On the forecast track, Helene is expected to move across the Gulf of Mexico during Thursday morning and afternoon and reach the west coast of Florida, in the area known as “Big Bend,” in the evening.

Hurricane Helene is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches (100-200 mm) across western Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Yucatán Peninsula.

One or two tornadoes are also possible tonight over parts of the Florida Peninsula and southern Alabama.
