Dominica rejects sanctions against Venezuela and urges the UN to “respect its sovereignty”

The President of the Commonwealth of Dominica referred to the situation in Venezuela before the UN to ask for non-foreign intervention and dialogue as ways to resolve the political crisis

Speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Dominica’s President Sylvanie Burton expressed her strong support for the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of States, calling for respect so that Venezuela “can resolve its internal problems without external interference.”

In turn, he renewed his support for the government of Nicolás Maduro, condemning the sanctions imposed by the United States. According to Burton, these measures not only affect the country’s authorities, but have also had an impact on the Venezuelan population, and “it is necessary to put an immediate and complete end to the hardships to which the country is subjected.”

Burton, the first woman to hold the presidency of Dominica, stressed in her speech the importance of respecting the fundamental norms of the United Nations Charter, stressing that the sovereignty of each nation must be inviolable.

“Our firm defense of respect for the United Nations’ norms of sovereignty and non-interference also drives us to urge respect for the right of the Government and people of Venezuela to resolve their internal problems without external interference,” Burton told world leaders gathered in New York.
