The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul issued a warning of heavy rains to the state’s population on Wednesday morning (25). Several regions are suffering from isolated storms, persistent rains, intense gusts of wind and occasional flooding.
In some regions, such as the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, part of the middle and northern coast, strong winds, lightning and hail were also recorded.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) had already a danger alert was issued this Tuesday (24). The most affected areas are mainly the southwest, southeast and center of the state, including the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre.
Civil Defense advises the population to seek shelter if caught in a severe storm. “If you are at home, close doors and windows tightly. During storms, unplug electronic devices. Shelter animals and keep them safe. Do not cross flooded or flooded areas on foot or by car. Water can hide risks such as holes, open drains and strong currents.”
“Seek information from your city’s Civil Defense, learn about the municipal Contingency Plans to find out what the risks are and how to act in the event of a disaster in your municipality,” the agency added.
