US President Joe Biden caused enormous frustration to the leaders of the far-right opposition in Venezuela and around the world when, in his last speech as president before the United Nations (UN), during the 79th General Assembly currently taking place in New York, he barely mentioned Venezuela.
“On the subject of Venezuela and the ‘regime’, the truth is – and I counted this with a stopwatch – he spoke about Venezuela for less than 5 seconds!” testified journalist Boris Castellano, who is in that North American city to cover the events of the assembly, as a special correspondent for Venezuelan Television (VTV).
During a live report on Tuesday, the journalist showed the incidents of Biden’s speech before the United Nations plenary. He confirmed that the opposition in Venezuela – and outside the country – expected him to offer a great speech on the Venezuelan issue, but reality hit them like a bucket of cold water, as he only made a fleeting reference to Venezuela, while he expanded on other considerations about the current world.
“The host, in this case Biden, gave a speech in which he ratified the errors of American foreign policy and gave his rather unique vision of what he believes to be the legality of the international order,” added Boris Castellano, summarizing the issues that, according to the American president, were the most important, such as the “conflict” in Gaza (when in reality it is a live genocide), Israel’s attack on Lebanon (which has been condemned worldwide) and Russia’s “war” against Ukraine (which shows Zelensky’s imminent defeat).
According to the journalist, this intervention showed the hypocrisy and contradictions of a government that will leave the presidency next November.
“Obviously, the double standards of the United States are crazy, and we have that in this double discourse of the United States to the United Nations. The first of them, and perhaps the most scandalous, is that it defends human rights in the world but supports with weapons and money the genocide of Israel against Palestine, which has caused 42,000 people to be killed, among them 16 thousand children,” warned Castellano.
He also commented on other contradictions present in Biden’s words, such as the supposed freedom he preaches, but it is the nation with the largest number of people incarcerated in the world; the supposed war on drugs, but the US is the main consumer of illicit drugs on the planet. “And also, although no one says it, one of the main centers for laundering money from drug trafficking.”
He also pointed to the US demand that countries in the rest of the world offer fair and transparent elections, when the North American nation practices an obsolete second-tier electoral system, where the candidate who obtains the most votes does not necessarily win the presidency.
