Pablo Martínez: Justice does not forget, Mr. Zedillo

Yo

Incredibly, After 24 years, former President Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León reappeared in the public eye in Mexico, invited to the annual conference of the International Bar Association. There he questioned the judicial reform proposed by López Obrador, calling it historical felony and of being an instrument for the destruction of the Judiciary.

It would not be the first time that he would question the current president. In October 2023, he attended the congress of the International Foundation for Liberty (FIL): Democracy and Liberty, held in Madrid, Spain. Accompanied by former PAN president Felipe Calderón, he issued severe criticism of leftist governments in Latin America, warning that Democracy in Mexico is at risk.

On both occasions, the ultras attached to globalism would take up the words of former President Zedillo as if they came from a prophet of democracy who illuminated the darkness; it is worrying how cynically the former president boasts of his time in the Mexican Executive and how the message was reproduced by people and media of dubious reputation, labeling the president as the president of the transition, as if we did not know that the one who appointed Fox was the same oligarchy that supported the PRI for 70 years.

But justice does not forget, Mr. Zedillo, the majority of the population that suffered during your years of governance do not forget the crimes and violations that you left behind as a legacy of impunity and conflict. We do not forget the Aguas Blancas case (1995), where state police from Guerrero killed 17 peasants in an attack, and the response of your government was the lack of justice and impunity in the case.

We do not forget, Mr. Zedillo, the Acteal massacre (1997), where a paramilitary group attacked 45 people in the community of Acteal, Chiapas, who had taken refuge in a church to pray for peace in the region. Paramilitaries that you ordered to be trained to kill, later releasing them, giving as justification that it was a fight between residents of the communities. A case for which you are directly responsible.

Justice has not forgotten, Mr. Zedillo, the violence unleashed during your administration, the increase in homicides, kidnappings, etc., related to drug trafficking. The complicity between cartels and the police became evident, leaving behind thousands of cases of violence and human rights violations considered crimes against humanity.

We cannot forget the accusations he faces at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for his lack of commitment to victims and the impunity he had with the perpetrators of crimes, covering them up. That is why the Court held him responsible for human rights violations during his administration.

Your cynicism is unbelievable, Mr. Zedillo. It is so unreal that you are returning to the territory you impoverished by converting private debts into public debt, privatizing national heritage and bathing entire regions in blood by covering up murderers. We do not forget. We have the task of keeping alive the memory of why you are not welcome.
