They say how this affects the country’s economy.

News Colombia.

The Colombian population is not increasing, according to a study by the Bank of the Republic, so there is concern about some economic variables that are affected by this substantial reduction.

So far in 2024, 255,055 people have been born, a drop of more than 15% compared to the first half of 2023, according to figures from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), a drop that is classified as “unprecedented.”

The economic situation, the environmental crisis, insecurity, migration are some of the factors that have motivated couples in Colombia not to have children: “It’s not an option because the economic situation is terrible.”

This decision undoubtedly has an impact on the country’s economy, as explained by the director of Fedesarrollo, Luis Fernando Mejía.

“A smaller job offer, that is, fewer people looking for work; the payment of pensions, which is derived from the contributions of young people who are working, in addition to the labor force, which is essential for economic development,” explained Mejía about the current birth rate situation in Colombia.

The decline in the birth rate in Colombia also affects consumer markets: “We will go from selling diapers for babies to selling diapers only for adults.”
