“The State is losing the battle against the racketeering to the detriment of all Peruvians. There is no strategy on the part of our authorities to combat this scourge that generates anxiety every day and impacts the quality of life of the population in general,” said the Foreign Trade Society (ComexPerú), in a statement.

The entity stated that no type of business is safe from extortion: market stalls, taxi drivers, transport companies, warehouses, small entrepreneurs, medium and large companies, and even soup kitchens, are daily victims of organized crime that has taken over the streets due to the absence of the basic service that the State must provide, which is security.
“This is in addition to the rise of illegal economies, the clearest example of which is illegal mining,” they added.
The union therefore indicated that it is urgent for the president to assume her leadership and call the Council of State to make the urgent decision to classify contract killing, extortion and the use of war weapons as terrorism, which will immediately lead to tougher penalties for those who commit these crimes.
They urged the Congress of the Republic, the Judiciary and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to heed this call and align themselves with a single strategy that prevents Peruvians from continuing to be at the mercy of organized crime that every day takes the lives and lives of good Peruvians who seek to get ahead.
“The responsibility in this battle does not lie solely with the Executive Branch, but with all the authorities in question,” they stressed.
According to the union, the country cannot wait any longer, and that is why the authorities need to get to work to improve security immediately, design a clear strategy and provide the population with solutions to the growing wave of insecurity we are experiencing.
“The future of the country is at stake,” they concluded.
