UFRJ engineering students win international competition in the USA

Students of the petroleum engineering course at the Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) won the championship for the second time Petrobowl Championship this Monday (23) during a world competition held in New Orleans, in the United States.

The championship is organized by Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), one of the largest organizations of engineers, managers and other professionals in the oil and gas industry.UFRJ engineering students win international competition in the USA

The competition included students from 32 countries on all continents. The Politécnica team was the only Brazilian representative.

The team formed by students Bruno de Almeida Leite, Gilles Garcia Dias, Matheus Bernadaro Dutra, Karina Policarpo dos Santos and Yan Nascimento Furtado defeated competitors from Indonesia in the final. The victory earned the students a prize of US$5,000, equivalent to approximately R$27,000.

Created in 2002, the championship went global in 2014 and currently confronts teams with technical and non-technical questions related to the oil industry, in a quizthat is, they need to be answered quickly.

This is the second achievement for UFRJ, which had already won the 2016 edition, held in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

Of the ten editions held since 2015, when it began to admit competitors from outside the United States, four were won by the American University of Oklahoma; four by the Mexican Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, in addition to two by UFRJ.
