The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, signed this Monday the approval of the Public Offer process for the Granting of Portions of the Radioelectric Spectrum in order to Develop and Launch New Communications Technologies. With this, the auction is open for the development of fifth generation technology in cellular telephony, better known as 5G.
The signing of this important document took place during the program “Con Maduro +”, in the “More Technology” segment, in which the Vice President of Public Works and Services, M/G Jorge Márquez Monsalve, was a guest, who presented a balance of the II International Telecommunications Technology Fair (FITELVEN 2024).
Márquez, who is also the General Director of the National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL), highlighted that Venezuela has been growing by leaps and bounds in the development of telecommunications technologies, so the entry into force of 5G technology was a pending debt.
“In recent years, we have grown in internet consumption. This year, the country consumed 11.1 TB, equivalent to 246%, which is exponential growth,” said Márquez, while noting that “today we have approximately 270 companies that provide internet service” in the country.
For his part, President Maduro congratulated the success of the II FITELVEN, which was held from September 18 to 21 at the Poliedro in Caracas, showing the progress of the sector in the country. “The Second International Technology Fair has been a success. The telecommunications sector is growing, expanding and consolidating itself as a source of the Venezuelan economy,” he said.
Mr. Jorge Márquez highlighted that thanks to the alliances with Iran, “we signed an agreement for the manufacture of optical fiber in the country. It would be the second factory in South America, which will allow us to expand into Central America and the Caribbean.” The plant will be located in the Special Economic Zone of the state of La Guaira.
Finally, Márquez said that investors who provide internet service in Venezuela only need to “review their finances and go to Conatel” to make their offer for the frequencies in which they will be able to operate 5G technology.
