On Monday, the Minister of the Interior, Juan José Santiváñez, announced the creation of a special group of the National Police to combat cases of extortion affecting public companies.
During a meeting with transport unions that are on strike today in protest against cases of extortion in the sector, the head of the Mininter stated that he reaffirmed his commitment to combat this problem.
For this reason, a highly specialized special group will be formed, following the example of the PNP’s Special Intelligence Group (GEIN) that was created to fight terrorism.
In this regard, he said that the new special group will have the necessary logistics to combat organized crime, as well as the strengthening of intelligence and the intensification of police operations.
“This special group will have the possibility of dealing with all these complaints (of extortion), in addition to the exclusive line that the Ministry of the Interior will have, which will be enabled in the next two weeks, and which is number 111, where they will be able to make their complaints in a confidential manner.“, said Santiváñez.
He also said that there will be a single team specialized in the matter, which will be in charge of the Kidnapping and Extortion Directorate of the PNP, which depends on the Criminal Investigation Directorate, which answers to the General Command of the National Police.
“We are not going to create, as other ministers have done, a parallel police group. It is a police group within the structure of the Police, but it will have as its superiors those who are the generals of the national directorates.“, he said.
