Leonel: “Abinader started his second term badly; “he doesn’t do anything right”

Leonel: «Abinader inició mal segundo mandato; “no acierta en nada”

New York.- The former president of the Dominican Republic and leader of the party People’s Strength (FP), Leonel Fernández, harshly criticized the management of President Luis Abinader during a political meeting in New York.

Fernández said that the government has started its second term “badly” and that “it has not done anything right,” announcing the creation of a “shadow government” to monitor and denounce the failures of the current administration.

“We are preparing to have a shadow government, in education, in health, in every area. We will be there to denounce the evils of this government that has started its second term in a bad way, it is not doing anything right,” said Fernandez.

The opposition leader illustrated the government’s mistakes by using the proposed constitutional reform as an example, which he described as unnecessary and a maneuver without citizen support. “It is an unnecessary reform; I call it a reform out of foolishness, and as such, it will not have the success or legitimacy of the reform we achieved in 2010,” he stressed.

Regarding the shadow government, Fernández explained that it will be made up of a team of experts and leaders who will work from the opposition to evaluate the government’s policies and propose alternatives.

According to the former president, this initiative is vital for democracy because it guarantees continuous oversight of government management and offers solutions to the problems facing the country, in contrast to what he considers improvisations by the government of Abinader.

He said that the shadow government is a space for surveillance and denunciation, but also for proposals. It is a necessary counterweight to ensure that public policies are made seriously and for the benefit of the Dominican people.

Fernández also highlighted the importance of FP leaders abroad being an active part of the thematic panels of the 2nd National Congress and 1st Ordinary Congress, Dr. Franklin Almeyda Rancier.

The leader of the main opposition organization explained that the thematic roundtables will serve as a fundamental platform for the construction of proposals in various areas, with the aim of better connecting with society.

“Thematic panels are the essence of our Congress and reflect our commitment to inclusive participation and the construction of a national project with the people,” he emphasized.

Fernández invited all members of the Fuerza del Pueblo to join this process, assuring that their participation is key to defining the political and strategic lines of the party, which aims to represent the interests of Dominicans in every corner of the country and the world.
