Minem head announces construction of a nuclear power plant in Peru

The head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Rómulo Mucho, announced that the country is taking the first steps towards the construction of a nuclear power plant.

“The world is advancing rapidly in the development of nuclear plants, and Peru cannot be left behind. I want to announce that we are already laying the first foundations for the construction of a nuclear power plant to generate electricity in Peru,” he said at the Mining Thursday, organized by the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP).

The minister highlighted the new fifth-generation generators, which are safer and more resistant to seismic events.

According to the intervention of the vice president of IIMP, Zetti Gavelán, this plant would be built in the Loreto region, to “meet the growing demand.”

In the case of the nuclear sector, copper, lead, molybdenum, silver, zinc, indium, aluminum, chromium, nickel, titanium and vanadium are needed.

Eight of the 17 metals considered critical for new technologies are produced in the country, which is why it is so highly valued worldwide. “Copper is the king of metals. It is present in all types of energy, such as solar, wind and nuclear, the latter being the one that requires the least metals,” explained Mucho.
