The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Spanish Embassy in Caracas “continue to work tirelessly to free” the two Spanish citizens detained in Venezuela accused of being part of a terrorist plot, official sources said on Monday.
Andrés Martínez Adasme and José María Basoa Valdovinos, aged 32 and 35 respectively, from the Basque town of Bilbao, were arrested in Venezuela for their alleged involvement in an alleged destabilizing operation against the government, according to authorities, and were even labeled as terrorists by President Nicolás Maduro.
The Spanish Government delegate in the Basque Country, Marisol Garmendia, stated in statements to the media that the work to achieve the release of both is being done “with absolute discretion.”
He said that “contact is maintained with the two families, they are kept informed of the steps taken and are informed of any progress.”
Garmendia insisted that this diplomatic work is always done “in the shadows” and that he remains cautious, which is why he has not provided any details regarding the two men.
The government of Nicolás Maduro announced the arrest of two Spaniards and several foreign citizens at a time of tension following the presidential elections on July 28 and after Spain granted asylum to opposition leader Emdundo González.

The announcement of the arrest of the two Spaniards was made by the Minister of Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello, on September 14, who linked them to the National Intelligence Center (CNI), although the Spanish government denied these accusations.
The relatives of the detainees had reported their disappearance since September 9 and, according to what they explained to the local police, the men traveled from Madrid to Caracas on August 17. Their last communication with them was on September 2 and through social networks, they asked for help to locate them.
